the birth of #coolstuff

Honestly, the birth of #coolstuff came from a psychedelic trip I shared with my brother up here where I live in Portland, Oregon. We were talking about our differences in life, and the paths that each of us is consciously on. He’s had more success taking a more conventional route, and I’ve taken my own more meandering and curious and gonzo approach to living and what I do while I am breathing.

I was feelin good, feelin giggly and just moving my body around when I said that “I just like cool stuff… cool stuff, you know?” Of course, we both started cracking up. I mean like crazy! I love my brother and that moment was one of the best of ours spent together, and we’ve for sure had some really super good times together. We used to be really super tight but then life happened and we kind of drifted apart as our interests and lives began to diverge. It’s pretty nuts how similar we can be on a personal level, though.

Initial Reflections

It became the chorus and the punchline to the day’s activities, which mostly included sitting at the park in our swim trunks and talking about I-don’t-even-remember-what, just brother stuff. We really vibed a good one, like how we used to. We joked about starting a religion based around #coolstuff, and then talked a tiny bit more seriously about trying to sell #coolstuff swag. I still kinda think it could catch on, because it’s simultaneously soooo silly and actually has some substance to it too.

Being Present

The whole “being present” thing is funny to me, in that people take it very seriously. One way that I see it (I sometimes see the same thing multiple ways) is that you’re always present doing something. You’re never not present, it just might not be what someone is saying is the right thing to be present about. Hah.

It’s cool though, a lot of times I have learned what to do on a personal level with other people and myself and my thoughts and internal workings is by reflecting on what and how others do things and then being like “nah, that’s not for me.”

Anyways, Back to #coolstuff

I’m really glad that I came up with #coolstuff. It’s such a useful tool! Things and people and situations can all be #coolstuff if you like it enough. Even if you don’t like everything about something or someone, the parts that you like can definitely be #coolstuff. What I like is that qualifying things beyond that is not necessary. A lot of people really like to qualify everything all the time, and I think it’s just not necessary to always try to be so so oh-so-smart and self-conscious about everything. Much of the time, it’s fine enough to like something or even just part of it and that’s it. Yeah! You can just like something and that’s it, and then go do or think about something else. Let it go, letting go is #coolstuff. Having fun is #coolstuff.
